Minnesota Senior Living Decision Guide
Senior Apartment, Independent Living or Assisted Living?
Trying to figure out which option fits your lifestyle now—and what may make sense if your needs change later?
Senior living choices don’t always fit into neat categories. A senior apartment may offer a surprisingly active lifestyle with extensive amenities and social opportunities. Independent living can overlap with both senior apartments and assisted living. And some communities allow services and care to increase as your needs change.
I created this free Minnesota Senior Living Decision Guide after a number of recent conversations with friends, clients and neighbors who were trying to sort through these choices for themselves or someone close to them.
The guide will help you think through:
- Your current level of independence and support
- Social activity and connection
- Occasional versus regular assistance
- Changes you already know may be coming in the next few years
- Different levels of need between spouses
- Whether the option you choose today gives you flexibility later

Watch the Video: Which Senior Living Option Fits?
Senior apartments, independent living and assisted living can overlap more than their names suggest. In this video, I explain some of the differences, why the Minnesota Assisted Living Report Card doesn’t necessarily answer the first question people are asking, and what to consider before deciding which type of senior living may fit.

The Labels Don’t Always Tell the Whole Story
Senior Apartment
Robust amenities and social opportunities, with little or no built-in personal support.
Independent Living
Organized social activities with added services and support available as needs change.
Assisted Living
Organized social activities with regular personal support incorporated into daily living.
Services vary by community, and the lines between these options can overlap.
A Note About the Minnesota Assisted Living Report Card
The State of Minnesota’s Assisted Living Report Card can be a useful tool for researching and comparing assisted-living communities.
But if you’re just beginning to explore senior living, there’s an important question to answer first:
Do you actually need assisted living?
Senior apartments, independent living and assisted living can overlap more than their names suggest. My decision guide is designed to help you think through those lifestyle and support differences before you start comparing individual communities.

Plan Before a Crisis Makes the Decision for You
It’s much easier to consider your options while you still have time and choices.
A sudden medical event, loss of a spouse or caregiver, or an unexpected change in mobility or memory can quickly turn a lifestyle decision into an urgent one.
Planning ahead gives you more choices—not fewer.
Want a Closer Look at the Different Lifestyles?
Still Not Sure Where to Start?
Sometimes the hardest part isn’t choosing a community. It’s figuring out which options are worth considering in the first place.
If you’re thinking about your own next move—or helping a family member, friend or neighbor work through theirs—I’m happy to have the conversation.
